VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIPS
All interns work with the education staff to increase their knowledge of marine biology and scientific research. Interns also learn and develop teaching, interpretive, and public speaking skills. UCSC students can earn up to five units of university credit through Environmental Studies, E. E. Biology, and other boards (150 hours are required for five units of credit.) Interns seeking university credit work a minimum of 8-10 hours per week at the Seymour Center with an additional 4-7 hours per week required for related preparation and research. Interns commit to a set schedule. A final project or paper may be required. Interns are strongly encouraged to attend Seymour Center seasonal training classes and enrichment lectures held throughout the year. Credit hours can be accumulated by attending these enrichment and training sessions. School Programs Teaching & Project
Intern: (College students or college graduates. Available
fall, winter, and spring, depending on availability) Gain valuable knowledge and experience through teaching a wide range of marine science concepts aligned with the California Science Content Standards. Learn how to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and ages (grades K-community college) in science activities. Develop useful public speaking skills and practice group management techniques essential to good teaching. Teaching & Project Interns need to be available at least one day per week (Tuesday-Friday) from 8 AM - 1PM for teaching. In addition to teaching and preparation time at home, interns are expected to schedule at least two additional hours per week to assist with administrative projects (make teacher reminder calls, photocopies, and assist staff with various projects, etc.), or lead additional tours as needed. Excellent volunteer enrichment opportunities are available to Seymour Center interns (lectures, field trips, trainings). All interns also assist with basic support and clerical work essential to program operation. Interns should be highly responsible, punctual, self-motivated, and committed to working as part of our volunteer teaching team. The number of Teaching & Project Intern opportunities is limited due to scheduling constraints, so apply early for consideration. Teaching & Project Interns are expected to volunteer for a minimum of two quarters, preferably three (i.e. six or more months). Preference will be given to interns who commit to the entire school year. The total number of hours an intern needs to work depends on whether the intern wants to volunteer for credit or experience. If interested in obtaining credit, interns must work a specific number of hours (usually 150 hours for 5 credits completed over two consecutive quarters--though one quarter is sometimes possible). Programs Docent Training Intern (College
students or college graduates. PLEASE INQUIRE EACH SUMMER OR FALL) Interns assist with interpreting research exhibits, seawater touch tank and aquarium displays to visitors. Interns also help with basic support and background research that is essential to program operation. Requirements for this position include: being responsible and reliable, excellent customer service skills, highly organized, and enthusiasm for learning marine science and interpretation. Interns work roughly 150 hours per quarter for a 5-unit internship (approx. 12-15 hours per week) or about 80 hours per quarter for a 2-unit internship (approx. 6-8 hours per week). A minimum of two 3-hour shifts per week is required with additional time spent for prep, set-up/clean-up, research, meetings, etc.

We are looking for dynamic college students and college graduates
with some basic knowledge of marine science, biology, or environmental
studies to work with our education staff. Visitor Programs
Interns have the opportunity to lead hands-on activities and help develop
and interpret the center's exhibits, aquaria, and marine mammal
research areas. School Programs Interns help provide educational
programming for K-12 students, by team-teaching Discovery Labs,
leading tours at the marine lab, and assisting with various projects.
Become
part of our outstanding crew of school volunteers who teach engaging,
hands-on, marine science activities in our seawater and teaching
labs. Also, learn to lead interpretive tours to Long Marine Lab’s
marine mammal overlook, blue whale skeleton, touch tank, and
more.
Working
with the Visitor Programs staff and volunteers, interns help develop
teaching materials for the docent training course held at the Seymour
Center from January to March. This is an amazing opportunity to develop
skills in areas such as administration, course organization, developing
materials, researching scientific concepts and current research data,
interpretation and be a part of a high quality training program.
