OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Seymour Marine Discovery Center seeks an Exhibits Curator/Designer. The Exhibits Curator/Designer is responsible for creating exciting and innovative exhibits (non-seawater), and for providing technical assistance to the Aquarium Curator regarding seawater exhibits. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all exhibits and interpretive signage––interior and outdoor, temporary and permanent––create an overall experience that is engaging, relevant, and inspires visitors to learn and return. Exhibits typically emphasize marine-related research at UC Santa Cruz.

Responsibilities include exhibit development, preparation, installation, and de-installation of temporary, permanent, or traveling exhibitions. The curator/designer works collaboratively with the education staff, aquarium curator, and the director for the conceptualization, formulation, and presentation of exhibitions that focus on how scientists study the ocean. The incumbent should be experienced with project management, interpretive planning, setting interpretive standards, developing acquisition, care, and maintenance policies, and audience engagement. The incumbent should be experienced with some combination of exhibit design, research, and writing, cost estimating, fabrication, installation, care, renovation, and de-installation. The curator/designer will suggest the most effective communications strategy for reaching the Center’s educational goals, through developed materials, procured objects, print, electronic media, and by exploring emerging technologies. The incumbent should be experienced in developing exhibit budgets, schedules, and working with outside contractors, ensuring the completion of all exhibitions and installations on time and within parameters. The incumbent should be a skilled storyteller, able to weave information into compelling designs that give audiences an understanding beyond mere information.

The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is part of Long Marine Laboratory, a marine research and education facility located on the University of California, Santa Cruz, Coastal Science Campus.
