Decoding the Mysteries of Migration in Salmon and Trout

Sunday, May 15, 2022

Lecture: 1:30 – 2:30 PM PDT
Meet-the-scientist reception: 2:30 – 3 PM PDT*

John Carlos Garza, Ph.D.
Supervisory Research Geneticist, Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries
Adjunct Professor, Ocean Sciences, UC Santa Cruz

Salmon migrate from their birth streams to the open ocean, where they spend several years feeding and growing before they return to those same streams to breed and then die. These iconic migrations are paramount in salmon biology, and their predictability has shaped ecosystems and human societies throughout the northern hemisphere.

Join Carlos to learn how the techniques of modern, western science, particularly genetics, are starting to unravel the mysteries of how salmon undertake these amazing migrations. See how novel research from the cooperative research group in Santa Cruz, and others, allow scientists to understand the mechanisms that are responsible for the huge variety of migration strategies found within salmon that, in spite of their differences, all lead back home.
